Career Day 2017

How amazing do these kiddos look?!

Thank you for helping them choose an occupation today!

We went around the classroom and shared our occupation/career, what the expectations are, and what inspired us to choose it.

CAREER DAY: OCCUPATION: ARCHITECT

I am a hobby-architect-lover so I taught the kiddos about the career!

Objective Students will be able to:

  • Students will learn about the architecture profession.
  • Students will discuss making goals and reaching them.
  • Students will be able to think critically about the buildings that surround them, consider form/function, and explain why/how circa and location play a role in the design of a building.
  • Students will design and make functional structures using a variety of materials.
Define the word architecture/architect:

  1. The art or practice of designing and constructing buildings.
  2. The style of a building with regard to a specific period, place, or culture.
  3. Discuss local / National / World architecture with students via slideshow.  Talk about the form and function as well as the architectural elements/attributes of each. (10 min)
  4. Ask students the following critical questions to consider throughout the slideshow containing pictures of local and world architecture – both old and new:
    • What does a building’s design tell you about how it is used?
    • Which designs do you like? Which don’t you like? Why?
    • What time period, place, and culture do you think this building was designed in?
    • Notice the similarities between buildings. Do you think that any of these buildings were designed and/or built by the same person? Why do you think so?

We read 2 books: Iggy Peck Architect & Roberto the Insect Architect!

Here’s the link to the presentation that I did for the class regarding the occupation: architect.

So now, the kids became architects themselves!  They used play-dough and toothpicks to design and construct their own buildings with both form and function in mind!
