STUDENTS WENT ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL! THEY WROTE SPEECHES, DEVELOPED “VOTE FOR ME” POSTERS, HIRED CAMPAIGN MANAGERS, HANDED OUT FLIERS AND GOODIES, AND READ THEIR SPEECHES ALOUD TO THEIR FELLOW SECOND GRADERS! WE VOTED AND THE RESULTS WILL BE IN SOON! THE CLASSROOM WILL TURN INTO A COUNTRY (PRESIDENT & VP) WITH 3 STATES (3 GOVERNORS) AND 6 CITIES (6 MAYORS). THE ELECTED OFFICIALS HAVE VERY IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND COULD BE IMPEACHED IF THEY DO NOT LIVE UP TO THEIR CAMPAIGN PROMISES!
We learned all about the roles and duties of mayors, governors, and presidents. To make the content conceptual and to bring it to life, we went on the campaign trail! Students wrote speeches and made campaign posters. Students read their speeches aloud in the auditorium and the cafeteria. Then we had a private election with official ballots. We will tally the votes and we will form our class government!
Student tables will be in the following formation:
- The Presidential Party (President and V.P.) in a group
- There are 6 cities (4 students at a table makes a city) where each city has a mayor.
- Every 2 cities (tables) makes a state where each state has a governor.
The elected government officials will have special duties around the room. We had so much fun doing this!
